Braddock has gained a lot of media exposure as it makes the transition into a modern developed community. Long-gone are the days of the mills and with support of Braddock’s unique mayor and the growing community of artists, there is a newer inspiration flowing throughout the neighborhood.
Braddock has become a haven for artists and art space with plenty of space to work and welcoming support from the neighborhood. Braddock is even known nationally for respected artists to pay a visit, most notably street artist Swoon makes visits to transform bleak walls into art. But collectively artists have a new central space to call home in a former Catholic School now known as UnSmoke Artspace. The school is both gallery and working space for artists and known for hosting events that help bring folks into the area and spark interest in new opportunity the neighborhood offers.
Next week, July 30th UnSmoke is hosting a free open event known as Substrates, featuring several artists from different platforms.
Artists include: silk screen printers Strawberryluna, MODESTo, Emil Industries, photography from Shannon Gustafson, and the assemblage & collage work of
Stephanie Towell. They will also be featuring musical performances of Traditional Irish Music band Hooley, house to hip hop artist Paul Dang, the work of Tom Cox, the experimental sounds of C-Town, and the down tempo goodness of Low Space.
