Westinghouse neon sign

Westinghouse

Westinghouse has a very well known logo created by famous graphic designer Paul Rand. Paul is also responsible for designing the IBM, UPS, and ABC logo.

This logo was once animated in a sequenced patterned sign (as shown above) on top of the former WESCO building on the North Shore. The logo was 9 Westinghouse logos made of blue neon tubing.

Unfortunately, the building was demolished to make room for PNC Park and the sign was in too poor of a condition to be salvaged. Originally the Heinz History Center planned on saving the sign and exhibiting it at it’s facility.

City Paper did a wonderful write up on the disappearance and history of the sign back in 2005. An interesting website created by a college Professor allows you to toggle the signs performance, click here to check it out.

If anyone happens to own or stumble upon some photos of the WESCO building with the sign attached I would love to see these photos.
